About DoJa:Technology for Creating "i-appli," i-mode Java Applications Notes:
i-mode's revolutionary Java-based i-appli service allows users of compatible handsets to download advanced software and content from more than 1,059 Web sites. They can then use the downloaded applications / content whenever they want, without having to reconnect to the Internet.
Launched in January 2001, i-appli is the breathtaking result of new advances in wireless technology and NTT DoCoMo's close cooperation in recent years with Sun Microsystems. i-appli uses the formidable Java platform developed by Sun for consumer electronics and embedded devices, as well as i-mode's large extended library, which was developed jointly by the two companies. Since the data processing power of mobile phones is far less than that of PCs, i-mode uses a version of Java called "KVM" that runs on systems with relatively low processing power. A key feature of the KVM environment is that its security functions are superior to those of standard Java. So, i-appli users don't have to worry about unauthorized viewing of their digital address books and other personal files, or the unintentional placing of calls billable to them. Although KVM i-appli won't directly run standard Java programs, users can easily convert many Java applications for i-mode use with minimal changes in functionality. Significantly, the overall architecture of the i-mode network remains the same with the advent of i-appli. With i-mode handsets, i-appli users download Java applications from conventional HTTP Internet sites just as easily as they do HTML documents, and Java programs on i-mode handsets also use the convenient HTTP format for data communications. Best of all, i-appli content is graphically rich and simple to use, containing the kind of expressive images, text, and sounds that are possible only with Java. Java's open specifications are setting the stage for even more business applications in the future. When NTT DoCoMo has fully combined the power of Java with the high-speed multimedia capabilities of FOMA, our third-generation mobile service, the possibilities for business will be literally endless. ![]() Dynamic Content
i-appli users access applications and content that is far more dynamic than conventional HTML-based content. They see their content displayed much more clearly, making it easier for them to view stock charts and maps. Further, they download and use standalone applications which conveniently run without an Internet connection.
![]() Automatic stock updates:
Stock prices and charts are automatically updated. The color display keeps track of stock movements of particular interest, including current prices, turnover, and ask and bid prices. Users can change the time interval between automatic updates.
Users also benefit greatly from access to client-server and agent-type applications. Agent applications are especially useful, because they automatically obtain information from servers or take predetermined actions at user-specified intervals. With agent functions, subscribers can keep up to date with weather information, traffic reports, and a broad range of other important data effortlessly. Secure Data Transmission
i-appli greatly enhances the security of data communications by enabling i-mode to employ Java applications that include content providers' own security software. To prevent wiretapping and cracking, i-appli users can encrypt input data before sending it to servers. Once the confidential data, such as card numbers and passwords, is encoded, users transmit it safely, without the risk of third-party viewing or tampering. For maximum security and convenience, i-appli utilizes a flexible password system that recognizes combinations of picture symbols in addition to conventional passwords based on numbers.
The i-appli package supports two highly advanced and widely used versions of Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption - the 40-bit version common to e-commerce and the 128-bit version favored by financial institutions. The SSL protocol devised by Netscape Communications Corporation achieves high-level security when Web browsers and Web servers exchange data. Adopted as a security standard for inter-network communication by major Web vendors such as Microsoft, SSL ensures that only bona fide Web servers are involved in any transmission of data. In a word, it is both a powerful safeguard against, and a strong deterrent to, data theft. i-appli also contains many other critical security features. For example, it prevents Java applications from accessing basic software such as dialers and address books, and does not allow access to the memory of i-mode handsets. In addition, i-appli prevents Java applications from starting up other Java applications, modifying them in any way, or accessing their auxiliary storage areas. It also allows Java applications to communicate only with the server from which the application was downloaded and gives users a "forced quit" option in the event of software malfunction. Because i-appli incorporates so many advanced security features, it is an attractive and powerful tool for businesses - especially those that rely on safe transmission of confidential information. Simple Downloading and Start-up
To download applications, i-appli users follow a simple procedure. First, they access a content provider's download page using their i-mode handset. Then, they select an application for downloading. On-screen messages inform them that the application can be downloaded to their i-mode handset. After downloading successfully, the handset automatically stores and installs the application and tells the user when the installation process is complete. To run the software, the user need only select it from a menu of stored applications and execute a single command.
![]() Download maps of your area:
View nationwide maps of Japan, according to train/subway station names, addresses, postal codes or even telephone numbers (corporate numbers only). Pinpointing locations on maps is even easier with the fine scroll functions. You can check information for over 300,000 locations and check the local weather there while you are at it.
Ever-evolving i-appli
With the release of high-performance 504i series handsets, i-appli service has become more convenient and data-rich. Now users can receive e-mail and make calls while simultaneously running i-appli content on the standby screen. Such content includes automatically updated news and advanced games such as the "raise your own pet" game. And while the 504iS series handsets with built-in cameras allow users to create original i-appli standby screens by photographing images and adding elements such as frames, the brand new 505i series are capable of linking i-appli content to handset functions such as i-mode mail transmission and reception.
